Most people have heard of using solar power around their home to help cut the high cost of utility bills. But have you considered all the ways how is solar energy used? We’ve all heard of solar panels and how to use them, or even how to make them at home using online kits, but there are many other ways to make use of solar energy at your home.

You can also use solar energy to heat your home in the winter time using a solar heat collector. Basically, a solar heat collector absorbs the sunshine’s heat and reflects it into your home using reflectors or a series of fans to move the heat to where you want it to be. You can’t replace your entire homes heating system using this method because it won’t raise your homes temperature more than 15 – 20 degrees. BUT it is a good method to supplement your home heating system so it doesn’t have to work so hard and it can save you money on your gas bill every month during winter.

Another way to use the sun is by supplementing the lighting in your home. Have you ever seen skylights in other peoples homes? Or even at Walmart when your shopping? That’s just another example of using passive solar power. On a bright sunny day if you have a few strategically placed skylights in your home you wont need to use any of your lights during the day at all. Having the skylights professionally installed can be expensive but the energy savings can be pretty substantial. Or, if your comfortable with DIY projects, you can buy them at home improvement centers and install them yourself for a fraction of the cost.
