Michael: Hi there. I’m Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we’re going to take a quick look at the Furrion 50 Watt solar panel. The solar panel is going to harness the power of the sun to help keep your batteries at a full charge while your RV or camper is being stored.Now, this panel kit is capable of 50 Watts, as well as 18.5 volts and 2.7 amps of current. So it’s not going to be a robust enough system to power you up while you’re out boondocking. This won’t be a big enough solar panel.
You’ll probably need to get multiple solar panels if you’re wanting to stay off the grid for long periods of time. This is mostly just for when your RV or camper is being stored. It’s going to help maintain those batteries so that they don’t lose power and potentially cause damage over the storage period.This is a really nice solar panel. It’s made with a mono crystalline material. So there are several different kinds of materials that are used for solar panels.
One of the other kinds is a polycrystalline. So monocrystalline meaning that it’s just like one single panel versus the polycrystalline, which is kind of like a fiber board. It’s pieced together. Several different kinds of crystalline materials are pieced together. So it’s less expensive, but it’s less efficient as well.
So your monocrystalline here is a really nice option for you. It’s going to help convert that solar energy efficiently.This does have tempered glass over the top to help to make it more durable, resistant. It will hold up to hail, wind and heavy snow. So it’s going to be very durable for you. It’s got an IP rating of 65.
So it’s going to be dust tight and extremely water resistant. You can spray it off with your power washer and it will hold up well. You’re not going to do any damage or anything like that.This does come with a 10 amp TWM controller and that controller is basically going to be the brains of the operation between your solar panel and your batteries, to make sure that your batteries aren’t being overcharged, which can cause damage, make sure that it’s getting enough power. And this is going to make this system compatible with sealed gel lead acid and lithium ion phosphate batteries. There’s different modes that will accept those different kinds of batteries. And then this does have the smart changing profile that’s going to protect against the charging conditions and help to extend your battery life and performance.To get this mounted in place, it’s going to be pretty simple. They’ve included the Furrion Z Mount bracket kit. So you’re going to get four of these lightweight aluminum brackets, and that will just fit onto the bottom of panel and then give you mounting holes that you can screw into your RV or camper’s roof to get this mounted.Now, the hardware, to get the feet installed is included, but they do not include any hardware to get those feet attached to your RV or camper. So you will need to provide your own screws and self leveling sealant. They do recommend number 10 screws to get those installed. You want to be careful where you’re mounting it, to make sure that you’re going to have at least two screws in a stud or something similar that’s going to be really strong.We do have lots of different sealants, the self leveling sealants for you, different colors to match your roof color so it’ll blend in nicely for you, but it should be very easy to get installed. Make sure that it’s going to be water tight for you.And this is going to be right at 26 and three eights of an inch long by 21 and a quarter of an inch wide, just over an inch thick, about one and one eight of an inch thick. So it shouldn’t take up very much room, but you do want to be careful where you’re mounting it. Stay away from any air conditioning or units or vents or anything like that. That could cause problems. Get it in a nice open spot where there’s not going to be shadows or anything on it.This will operate between negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 185 degrees Fahrenheit. I’ll show you the underside here. You can see where our unit attaches to our cables. These cables are 34 inches in length, so should be pretty easy to get them routed where you need them to go. They also include this wire entry panel here so this is going to help cover up your entry holes. So you will need to drill a hole to get your wires from your solar panel down inside your RV to connect to your battery. This is an easy way of getting those routed in, that’s going to be protected from t
